The prototypes have been sewn and the production of the clothing is scheduled to start next week: The Albstadt-based Mey GmbH & Co. KG is converting part of its production to mouth and nose masks. The products are to be sold directly to clinics and medical companies.
According to the company, the number of enquiries from medical institutions has increased in recent days to such an extent that Mey is switching some of its production capacities from premium underwear and lingerie to the manufacture of functional face masks for mouth and nose protection. As Mey points out, the masks are a hygiene product which could neither be medically tested nor certified in the short time available. The company expressly points this out to its customers; the masks are only available to institutional facilities such as hospitals and care services. Mey does not offer a replacement for masks according to FFP2 or FFP3 standard, which are required in direct contact with COVID-19 patients. Nevertheless: "With this measure, we hope to make a small contribution to the fight against the corona virus," said Matthias Mey, Managing Partner of the Mey Group of Companies.
